SAGWADI MOHLABI

WHO AM I

Sagwadi Mohlabi (b. 2002) is a South African self-taught textile artist based in Johannesburg, working primarily in punch-needled tapestry. Her practice investigates joy, dance, and play as central forms of resistance within black womanhood, drawing on the gestures, movement, and expressive presence she observes in everyday life.

Biography

Through her work, Mohlabi captures dance not only as physical movement but as embodied outward presentation, distinctive speech, and the customised claiming of space—key elements she interprets as deliberate acts of identity-making. Working with tactile texture, fluid silhouettes, hand-written text, and a bold colour language, she explores how Black women continually shape, affirm, and perform their identities through intentional stylistic and spatial choices.
Born and bred in Limpopo, she grew up watching her grandmother skillfully weave Xitsonga traditional skirts by hand using yarn—a childhood memory that sparked her enduring curiosity about yarn as a medium. She began working with textile-based processes in 2023 and has since developed a growing exhibition profile.
Mohlabi is a Rele Arts Foundation Young Contemporaries 2025 resident (Ekiti State, Nigeria) and a finalist in the Ellis House Art Building 2nd Annual Art Competition. Her work has been exhibited at Constitutional Hill Women’s Jail, Goethe-Institut Johannesburg, Kalashnikovv Gallery, Ellis House Art Building, August House, Mamakashaka’s Meji Meji Pop-Up, V&A Waterfront Artist Alliance Virtual Gallery, BoConcepts Africa, and the Obafemi Awolowo Civic Centre with Rele Gallery. She is currently part of News of Spring at Neighbarhood, Johannesburg (2025).
