Sichumile Adam (b. 2001) is a Johannesburg-based visual artist whose work is deeply rooted in the exploration of Black girlhood — the complexities and contradictions that define the journey from girlhood into womanhood.
She studies the ways identity, sexuality and femininity intersect within the lives of young Black women, using the gaze of societal perceptions to highlight how shame and respectability confine self-expression. Her paintings celebrate culture and autonomy, interrogating the premature sexualisation and moral expectations placed on Black girls — embracing sexuality instead as a site of self-discovery, empowerment and resilience.
